What it is

Netflix Playground is live now in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand — with a wider rollout planned for April 28. The app bundles kid-friendly titles aimed at ages eight and under, many built around familiar franchises like Peppa Pig and Sesame Street (which is also streaming on Netflix). Games are included with a Netflix subscription and, importantly for parents, come with no ads or in‑app purchases.

Why now

Why a kids app? Netflix is doubling down on family-friendly gaming as part of a larger strategy pivot. It has been reported that the company is moving away from big indie bets and sprawling projects and instead focusing on TV-style and family titles — even experimenting with cloud-based TV games, including a FIFA tie-in timed for the World Cup. “We’re creating a seamless destination for discovery, learning, and play,” said John Derderian, Netflix’s VP of Animation Series + Kids & Family TV. A simple promise, but a heavy lift.

The context

This launch comes after several missed swings in Netflix’s games push. It has been reported that the service’s gaming catalog hasn’t gained much traction despite some high-profile efforts, and Netflix has shuttered multiple studios in the process. In 2025, president of games Alain Tascan said the company “needs to find our voice.” Netflix Playground feels like a clear attempt to do just that — safer, smaller, and squarely aimed at families. Will it stick? Kids (and exhausted parents) will decide.
