Obsolete Google nag drowns out vital bar info at Swedish concert hall

Old software, new embarrassment

It has been reported that a display at Uppsala Konsert & Kongress in Sweden showed an old Google Backup and Sync retirement notice that covered up a message telling concertgoers the bar would be open late. Reg reader Henrik Lans flagged the incident after attending a show by The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain — yes, that is a thing — and complained the deprecation warning was “blocking the information” about the bar’s hours. Talk about killing the buzz before the ukuleles even start.

A relic that shouldn't be on stage

Backup and Sync was introduced in 2017 and retired in 2021 in favor of Google Drive for Desktop, yet the nag persists on the venue’s screens in Swedish. The UKK building, opened in 2007, looks the part; some of its digital signage apparently does not. Who let a four‑year‑old sunset message gatecrash an event notice? It’s the sort of cheesy timing that makes you groan and reach for your phone — to check whether the bar really is open, naturally.

Punchline: update the screens

There’s a bittersweet charm to a crowd primed for ukulele covers and Muppet jokes being foiled by corporate housekeeping. It’s petty, it’s funny, and it’s fixable — someone just needs to update the signage software. Until then, bring a friend who checks social media; or better yet, bring a Swedish Chef impression. Bork bork bork.
