OpenAI starts testing ads in ChatGPT — but not for paying customers

What OpenAI says
It has been reported that OpenAI is beginning a phased test of ads in ChatGPT in the United States, starting February 9, 2026. Ads will appear for Free and Go plan users; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts are exempt. During the test, OpenAI says it will not show ads to accounts where the user says (or the system predicts) they are under 18, and logged-out users will see only age-appropriate placements. Short and sweet: if you’re not paying, you might see a sponsored card under a reply.
How the ads will show up
Ads will appear below the end of a ChatGPT response, clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the model’s output. OpenAI says ads run on systems separate from the chat model and that advertisers cannot shape or alter ChatGPT’s answers — it has been reported that this separation is intended to prevent influence. Advertisers allegedly do not get access to your chat content, memories, or personal details; they reportedly only receive aggregated metrics like views and clicks. Users can opt out of ad personalization in Settings > Ad Controls.
Why this matters
This is a familiar crossroads: monetize the free tier or ask more users to pay. OpenAI frames ads as a way to keep free access reliable while funding continued investment in infrastructure and product development. Skeptics will sniff around the privacy and integrity promises — and rightly so. After all, we’ve seen platforms promise “no influence” and users still worry: can an AI really be immune to commercial tugging?
The user choice
So what now? If you want an ad-free ChatGPT, the route is clear: upgrade. If you stick with Free or Go, expect a single sponsored unit sometimes — one ad, not a parade. It’s a test, OpenAI says, and it will expand “gradually” as it learns. Fingers crossed they get the balance right; nobody likes being sold to while asking for homework help.
